RECIPE: Paleo Italian Meatballs

I've tried so many different paleo Italian meatballs. No offense or anything but none of them were very good.  One of the kids favorite meals is spaghetti and meatballs and it is something that can easily be paleo-ized... If you have a good meatball recipe.

The other night I decided to just adapt our favorite meatball recipe to paleo.

I nailed it.

Paleo Italian Meatballs
(Adapted from Meatball Nirvana at Allrecipes.com)

1 pound grass fed beef (ground pork would probably be awesome!)
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 cup onion minced (I grate mine!)
1 small garlic cloved minced
1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1 beaten egg
1/2 cup almond flour

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.  Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl.  I form the mixture into two inch meatballs but you can make smaller ones or bigger ones.  Just adjust the bake time.  Put the little guys on the baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes.

I make them ahead of time and then about an hour before dinner I put them in a pot of pasta sauce and reheat them on low.  It makes the sauce taste so good!

Rao's Marinara Sauce is paleo and it's delicious!

They are amazing served over spaghetti squash!

Very nice! Last time I made meatballs I added some ground flax seed. I'll have to try baking mine...seems less of a hassle than browning them in batches! I also started making my own sauce recently and I don't think I'll ever go back to jarred again. It's really easy, crushed tomato, garlic, onion, basil, salt and pepper. I also need to give spaghetti squash another try. I wasn't impressed the first time but its always worth a second attempt 😀 Have a great weekend Kristen!

Ooh I love meatballs! These look delicious :) Adding almond flour instead of breadcrumbs is such a good idea!

I'm glad you love meatballs too! The sauce we use almost 100% of the time is my homemade fresh version that I stockpile in the summer, then freeze, when our garden tomatoes are coming out of my ears:) I'm hoping my stash lasts us till spring!

What a great idea. I'm going to Whole Foods on Monday for almond flour. Doing good -- a few slips -- with paleo eating, but feeling terrific.

Carol- no one is perfect! Glad you are feeling great. That's the best part of paleo!

Just out of complete curiosity...what makes a pasta sauce paleo and what makes it not paleo? I am not very knowledgeable in that area.

Kristen @ Change of Pace said...

Hannah- Sugar! And cane juice. Pasta sauces almost always have it. Even the organic whole foods brand has added sugar :/

Good Paleo Marinara...I sometimes use Rao's: http://www.raos.com/images/view.aspx?productId=440
or my current favorite that I buy at Costco: http://www.victoriafinefoods.com/products/white-linen-marinara-sauce-40oz1
I use them as is or add in some personal touches to make it 'home made' :)

My current favorite I buy at Costco: http://www.victoriafinefoods.com/products/white-linen-marinara-sauce-40oz1
I sometimes use Rao's: http://www.raos.com/images/view.aspx?productId=440
which you can find at Sprouts and even Target
Both are Paleo! I use them as is or add my personal touches to make them "home made".

Check out my recipe for Paleo Pasta Sauce... This version is the meat sauce but just omit the meat and you have an easy peasy sauce...

Ok, so I made these Wednesday night with high hopes but low expectations (because like you said, all of the other paleo meatball recipes I've tried have varied from 'meh' to flat-out awful). These were PERFECT! Thank you!!! These made 20 meatballs and my husband and 5-yr-old left me with FIVE :) I'll be using them in my Italian Meatball Soup next! Thank you again!

I am so glad you liked them Denise! Thank you for letting me know. Sometimes I make up a recipe and am not sure if it's really good or not haha!

I'm looking forward to these for dinner tonight. I checked out the original recipe you linked from Allrecipes to see what non-paleo ingredients you weeded out. The Worcestershire sauce intrigued me because I used to use this in meatloaf recipes a lot. It does add great flavor to ground beef. Don't think I ever did tried it in meatballs though. I've had a hard time finding a paleo meatball with good flavor so I think I will make up some paleo Worcestershire sauce beforehand to add in. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Definitely let me know what you think girl!
